The Original, The Godmother, the start of this whole dang wild ride.

Our longest-running, most beloved coffee from Gakenke Province in northwest Rwanda. Bright and juicy. What more can you ask for, partner?

  • The coffee
  • the producer
  • The brand

Twongerekawa Coko’s washing station is located in the rolling hills of Gakenke Province, towards the northwest of Rwanda. This is the country’s volcanic region, with high elevations and active soil providing prime conditions to produce high quality coffee cherries with bright acidity.

Our early editions from Coko were fully washed and double fermented, but we eagerly jumped at the opportunity to buy their new experimental honey-processed lots back 2021. This process focuses on removing around 60% of the coffee’s mucilage and then leaving it to dry on shaded beds, turning it regularly. The result adds a touch more dried fruit and fuller body to your cup, in addition to some classic bright acidity.

At our shop in Amsterdam, we rock this as our mainstay espresso, but some of our oldest Rwanda fans swear by filter brewing these beans. Either way, you’ll get some wild candied orange notes and a real consistent body.

TWONGEREKAWA COKO

Our co-owner Cody visited Coko at the end of 2018, and their way of doing things has inspired our overall approach to how we source and who we aim to work with.

Twongerekawa Coko Cooperative Society is a mainly female cooperative high up in the mountains of northwest Rwanda’s Gakenke Province. Coko’s management team is made up of 8 women and 4 men, and their mission is to alleviate poverty amongst the 800+ smallholder farmers in their area through high quality coffee production.

Coko consistently tweaks their agro-education programs and processing methods to yield better and better green coffees year after year. They’re also a particularly groovy example of localized sustainability efforts: they invested in an efficient Colombian washer in order to become completely self-sufficient on mountain runoff water for their fermentation and washing processes; and they’re deeply committed to biodiversity and shade tree usage.

Fucking Strong Coffee is a specialty coffee brand from the folks behind Good Beans - a beloved bean shop tucked amongst the canals of Amsterdam. We built the brand in 2018 as a response to the monotonous, snobby tone that had infected most of the specialty coffee world. Minimalist cafes, ridiculously technical language, pretentious branding, and moralizing eye rolls… they all snarkily whispered the same thing: specialty coffee is for the few. You want to know what we think…? Fuck that.

In many ways, our beans are fancy as fuck. We traceably source coffee from small, top-notch producers who are paid far above market price for meticulously processing their cherries and sustainably maintaining their land. In Amsterdam, we specialty roast with the type of care that would make any smirking barista smile – bringing out bold, surprising flavors that we’re always jazzed to share with our friends.

Our fresh beans are packed in our signature resealable cans (which you can refill for a discount at our Amsterdam shop if you're in town) or in swanky black kilo bags. We roast weekly and ship within 2-3 business days.
