  • MOUNT ELGON
  • Filter
  • BLUEBERRIES, CACAO
Our fan favorite filter edition: light and fruity, with a surprisingly full body. Pleasing citrus, and a chocolate-y finish -- so much balance it'd make a tightrope walker blush.

This particular lot of Sakami Coffee’s 2022 export comes from Dr. Rosebella Langat of Chepsangor Coffee in the rolling hills of Western Kenya’s Nandi County (near Mount Elgon). At Chepsangor they follow a zero-till method while planting seedlings; coffee trees grow under the shade of indigenous trees and the perimeter of the nearby river is protected by a 10 meter border of natural vegetation. Beehives are installed throughout the farms and soil health is annually tested and protected with organic leaf matter and manure.

These beans are a mix of Batian and Ruiri 11 varietals, and are fully-washed AA profile. Women carefully select the red-ripe cherries during harvest for processing and sort the parchment to perfection while drying under the sun.

We roasted this edition to be characteristically “Kenyan” — a bright, expressive fruity profile. Beautiful as a light filter coffee, and happy to be iced on a warm summer day.

SAKAMI COFFEE

This origin story is really one about patience. While Kenya has built a reputation for producing some of the best quality specialty coffee in the world, it’s also notoriously untransparent — stuck in an antiquated system that benefits layers of middlemen as opposed to hard-working farmers. Our importer, This Side Up, waited seven years to find the right Kenyan producer who could circumvent this system and bring real value to those on the ground. Enter: Gloria Gummerus.

Gloria left her life as a beautician to move back to her hometown and dedicate herself to coffee. In 2004, she bought a plot of land on Mount Elgon with her Finnish husband, Jarmo, and named it Sakami, setting off a journey to bring prosperity back to region, nourish an ambitious agro-forestry system, and help surrounding farmers access (and eventually bypass) a well-guarded, colonial coffee export market. This Side Up — working with Stean Fasol — forged a partnership with her in 2021 to bring directly-traded, fully-independent coffee to Amsterdam. We were proudly part of that very first 100-bag import, and released a small, delicious batch of her beans that autumn.

In order to grow the relationship, Gloria needed to grow her export volume. She began searching for like-minded women in the area who shared her passion for sustainably grown coffee and thirst for independence. The result: a group of five progressive women farmers who have banded together to produce and sell their coffee under the Sakami name. One of those is Dr. Rosebella Langat (pictured) who started Chepsangor Coffee in Nandi, producing beautiful coffee in the rolling hills around her hometown and supporting an inspired group of local smallholder female farmers.

Fucking Strong Coffee is a specialty coffee brand from the folks behind Good Beans - a beloved bean shop tucked amongst the canals of Amsterdam. We built the brand in 2018 as a response to the monotonous, snobby tone that had infected most of the specialty coffee world. Minimalist cafes, ridiculously technical language, pretentious branding, and moralizing eye rolls… they all snarkily whispered the same thing: specialty coffee is for the few. You want to know what we think…? Fuck that.

In many ways, our beans are fancy as fuck. We traceably source coffee from small, top-notch producers who are paid far above market price for meticulously processing their cherries and sustainably maintaining their land. In Amsterdam, we specialty roast with the type of care that would make any smirking barista smile – bringing out bold, surprising flavors that we’re always jazzed to share with our friends.

Our fresh beans are packed in our signature resealable cans (which you can refill for a discount at our Amsterdam shop if you're in town) or in swanky black kilo bags. We roast weekly and ship within 2-3 business days.
